About Coleman
Coleman Tent – More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a “no light, no pay” clause–a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked–and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company’s current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. Coleman Tent Design and Feature
The Coleman Instant Tent is designed for tent campers who want a cabin tent that sets up quickly with a minimum of effort. With the Instant Tent’s integrated frame, campers need only to stake down the floor, unfold the pole sections, telescope and lock them to stand the tent.
Heavy-duty, 150-denier wall fabric resists rain and wind. This fabric is approximately 50% thicker and substantially heavier than the standard 75 denier polyester in most tent wall fabric.
An inverted ‘T’ door offers access to the tent. Large zipper cuffs over the vertical and horizontal zipper tracks protect them in the rain. Windows in the door have roll-down storm flaps to allow ventilation and a view through the door. Large windows on the walls of the tent also ventilate the tent.
To speed set up, Coleman has designed the tent with an exoskeleton (exposed external frame). There is no rainfly, and the ceiling of this single-wall tent is solid fabric, except for hooded vents at the peak. The Coleman Instant Tent is fully taped at the factory, so a minimum of spot sealing will be necessary to prepare the tent for camping.
The fabric is permanently attached to the pole frame, which telescopes and folds up instead of separating into pole segments. The Coleman Instant Tent is freestanding and can be carefully moved around the campsite fully assembled, in order to provide a better view or catch a breeze.
Without large mesh ceiling panels, most ventilation will be managed through the windows, which rise high on the tent walls in order to allow air in the ceiling to escape. Dark storm panels on the windows and doors allow for sleeping in in the morning. Heavy duty 68 denier mesh windows keep flying insects out.
Storage pockets on the tent walls below the windows keep small items organized.
Coleman Tent Spec and Setup
The Coleman Instant Tent fabric is 150 denier coated to 450 mm. Coleman Instant tents use 22 mm (7/8″), 20 mm (25/32″), 16mm (5/8″) steel poles, depending on the model. Smaller diameter sections telescope into larger diameter sections.
To stand the tent, just put the floor end of the tent bundle on the ground, unfold the poles, telescope and lock the ceiling pole sections to form the ceiling, telescope and lock the wall pole sections to stand the tent. The tent body is attached to and opens up with the poles. Position the tent, stake it down and guy it out. In the wind, stake the upwind edge of the floor first.
To take down the tent, unlock the poles and telescope them together. The poles fold where the side support pole meets the ceiling pole and where the ceiling poles meet at the center hub. The tent frame and body fold together something like the paper maybaskets that children make. The tent bundle will need to have the air forced out of it and be strapped before placing it in the carry sack.
The two poles telescope and lock with a spring-loaded button that pops into a hole (something like an umbrella). The button needs to be aligned with the hole, so campers may need to gently twist the adjacent pole sections until the button finds the hole.
To keep the telescoping mechanism in good working order, owners should be careful not to force any pole sections when telescoping them. If a pole binds, gently twist it a bit in one direction or the other, and it may then telescope normally. Owners should keep the pole sections clean, so that dirt does not get into the telescoping mechanism.
Because the floor of the Coleman tent is attached to the frame, campers should use a ground cloth under the floor to keep it as clean as possible. The Instant Tent poles collapse into fairly long lengths, so the pack size of these tents varies between 3′ to 4′. Campers may need some ingenuity when loading the tent into a small car.

Just got back from a Cub Scout camp out. Our tent was set up (ground tarp, tent and guy lines) in less that 10 minutes. We didn’t even need to read the directions the first time we did it. The only thing you need to know is to extend the top poles first and then the low ones. The tent was great in mild weather. Not sure how it holds up on a rainy night.
i purchased this Coleman tent for my 17 year old daughter; she and her brother and friend set it up for the first time – it indeed popped up very almost instantly; they had it up completely within five minutes, with the initial set up not including the stakes probably taking two minutes or less. i had my daughter watch the video on youtube by Coleman first and also had her watch the take down video; we haven’t taken it down yet. i’m would give 5 stars for the set up; it didn’t rain last night when they slept in it, so i don’t know about water getting in or not.

I have yet to try it ‘in the field’ but just got it up in the car park (fnarr fnarr) on my own in about 60 seconds. It really is every bit as easy as they say it is. My quickest erection ever! Putting it back away single handed is quite a bit trickier but still do-able in under 5 mins. Even getting it into the bag wasn’t any trouble at all. Now that it’s packed away it’s about twice the size as it was when it came, but that’s pretty much the same as any other tent.
